


Bernard introduces Linda and John, the Director’s long-lost wife and their illegitimate son, with great pride. Bernard sees himself in John and encourages him to join them on their journey back to London. It breaks his heart that he’s all alone and miserable. John tells Bernard the account of his own life. When he tells Bernard his tale, it comes out that the Director and Linda, a lady who vanished twenty-five years ago, had an illegitimate son. They run upon John, The Savage, who introduces himself. Unhygienic circumstances make Lenina cringe. In the company of Lenina, he visits The Savage Reservation. As Lenina asks Bernard whether he had fun the following day, Bernard is hurt by how she appears to debase herself. She persuades him to take soma, and they return to his room to engage in sex. He attempts to show her the beach and communicate some of his radical thoughts, but she tears. On a romantic date, Bernard and Lenina get together. An “orgy-porgy” occurs when men and women ingest soma and sing together.

Bernard Marx’s Solidarity Service Day will be held on the following day. Henry and Lenina have supper, go on a soma-holiday, and witness a performance of synthetic music.
